Painlings representing the life of St. Stephen
These chiaroscuro paintings are carried out in tempera on canvas and were inspired by Vasari.
(Starting from the right, inside the entry).
a) St. Stephen administering the Eucharist to the faithful, attributed to Jacopo Chimenti (“I'Empoli”) (1554 1640).
b)St. Stephen paying a retun visit to Lucilla, attributed to lacopo Chimenti (“I'Empoli”) (1544 1640).
c) The fall of the statue of Mars and St. Stephen 's arrest attributed to Alessandro Allori (1535 1607).
d) The martyrdom of St. Stephen, Pope, attributed to Giorgio Vasari (1511 1574)
e) The burial of St. Stephen, by Jacopo Ligozzi (1574 1626) but recently attributed to Jan Van der Straet or Straten, known as Stradano (1523 1605).
Other paintings
Placed high on the left in the central nave is a paitirlg by Aurelio Lomi, a Pisan artist (1556 1622), depicting Holy Family with Pope St. Stephen; it is surrounded by a magnificently arved gilt wood frame.
High up on the right, above the fragments from the Tuscan galleys, is a painting by the l9th century artist Carlo Brighenti of Pope Pius IV handing over the Statutes of the Order to Cosimo 1.
